Practicing and drawing from carnal art forms such as boxing and dance, Cristina Planas explores and exercises the body as a vector of knowledge and a conduit for transmission. A form of embodied theory, she oscillates between moments of control and letting go, creating openings within her process that over time allow for a meant-to-be-ness in the work, and beckon the surfacing and materialisation of drives and desires. Through acts of embodiment she challenges conventional portrayals of women’s bodies. Exploring themes of discipline, female sexuality, nurture and domination, her installations hold the viewer in an intimacy and vulnerability that overlaps with forms of the spectacle and aspects of strength and brutality.

Cristina Planas currently lives and works in London. She graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art (2018) and became a gold medalist at the Swedish Golden Girl boxing championship (2018).
