Copenhagen-based Danish photographer Casper Sejersen works across the fashion, film, fine art and commercial contexts.
Sejersen has become known for a transcendent still-life and portrait photography style, marked by a dreamlike placement and characterisation of figures and objects and whcih are as visually alluring as they are deeply disquieting,
Engrossing and unsettling, balancing authority with fragility, Sejersen’s unique application of semiotics, and stage-like compositions are arranged as alternative ‘personal worlds’. Within these, particularly in his personal work, Sejersen distills a potency of narrative that investigates psychology of the self, sexual politics, familial intimacy and childhood memory, all the while underpinned by a tension that explores the boundaries of personal freedom versus societal constraints.
Across his commercial and editorial work - Sejersen’s approach foregrounds a particular type of psychologically charged ‘character’: he frequently works with actresses such as Charlotte Gainsbourg, Cate Blanchett and Isabelle Huppert in this context, since each of these women have an especially strong ‘character type’ inflected with psychological tension or erotic undertone.
Casper Sejersen is perhaps best known for his ‘orgasm portraits’ of the cast of Lars Von Trier's film Nymphomaniac (2013). His work on Lars Von Trier’s infamous film also concluded in a book titled Belongs to Joe (published by MACK). Collaborating with art historian Cecilie Høgsbro, the photographic essay responds to the script of the film and emerges as a bold interweaving of ecclesiastical history, sadism, fascism, pyrotechnics and botany.
In 2019, Cob presented Sejersen's much anticipated debut solo exhibition of new work One, Two, Three, Four and simultaneously a selection of Sejersen's archive works for PHOTO LONDON 2019.
Since 2019, Sejersen's photography has been published editorially in Vogue US and L'Uomo Vogue, whilst he also commissioned by brands such as Burberry, The Vampires Wife, Louboutin, Thom Browne and Valentino. Similarly, portrait commissions have included Cate Blanchett, Harry Styles, Nick Cave and Bella Freud. -
