Cob Gallery are proud to present six new paintings by Tomo Campbell.
These works are exemplary of Campbell’s latest painting process - which stemmed from the works featured in his recent Cob Gallery solo exhibition, Go on Then.
This investigation - pictorially and technically - arises from a unique ’collaging’ technique which sees the artist replicate, extract and layer the details of his own painting archive, across and within new compositions. This is pursued by Campbell as he seeks new ways to ‘unsettle’ his paintings from the limitations of both fixed perspective and static pictorial ground.
Traditionally, Campbell’s compositions arise from the creation of collages which interlace a range of art historical source imagery. These collages are then unified in a series of preparatory drawings used by the artist to work up into large scale paintings. For the body of works created between 2020-2021, Campbell elaborates this process, and instead, composites elements from previously completed paintings. Not only does this process forge new lineage with the original source material but it seeks to dislodge his images from the specifics of time, space and narrative.
